Answers for San Diego families planning Tijuana pet care.
We put this page together to make the process feel straightforward before you book. It covers pricing, weekend scheduling, pickup options, transport safety, and what to expect before and after your pet's visit.
Common Questions
These answers are written for how CrossVetCare currently books, transports, and coordinates care.
How do I get started?
Start with the Book a Consultation button on the main page. You will share your contact information, your pet's details, the type of care you are looking for, and a requested weekend date. From there, CrossVetCare reviews the case, sends a personalized estimate, and helps you move through the booking steps from quote approval to transport coordination and return handoff.
What does the $50 deposit do?
The deposit holds a confirmed appointment window after your quote is approved. It is refundable outside the 48-hour cancellation window and becomes non-refundable within 48 hours of the scheduled booking.
Do you only work on weekends?
At the moment, CrossVetCare is structured around Saturday and Sunday coordination. That schedule helps us keep handoffs, transport timing, and clinic communication consistent for families crossing from San Diego.
What kinds of pets do you help?
CrossVetCare is set up to transport cats and dogs. If you have another type of companion animal, reach out first so we can confirm whether the clinic plan and transport setup are appropriate. For the safety of other riders, we do not transport pets with contagious illnesses such as parvo.
How much can I expect to save?
Many families use CrossVetCare because treatment in Tijuana can be a fraction of comparable San Diego pricing, especially for services such as dental work or surgery. The exact total still depends on the diagnosis and treatment plan, so we recommend requesting an estimate for the specific service you need. Personalized quotes are typically returned within 24 to 48 hours, and many requests can be answered sooner.
What does transportation pricing include?
Transportation pricing covers the travel day coordination, border-crossing logistics, and your pet's pickup and return plan. Transport rates vary based on how long the appointment is expected to run, and veterinary services are quoted separately so you can see care costs and transport costs clearly. If you want home pickup instead of meeting at a designated handoff point, that can be quoted as an added service.
Where do we meet on appointment day?
Most families either meet at a designated handoff point or request home pickup and drop-off for an additional fee. We confirm the exact plan during scheduling so you know where the handoff happens, what time to be ready, and how your pet will be returned after the appointment.
Can I request a specific clinic or procedure?
Yes. If you already know the clinic you prefer or the type of treatment you are trying to coordinate, include that in your request. If you are still deciding, we can use your pet's needs to help shape the right next step.
Is CrossVetCare licensed and insured?
Yes. CrossVetCare is federally licensed to transport dogs and cats and carries insurance appropriate for professional pet handling and transport. Your pet is not being handed off casually; the transport side of the service is built around licensed, insured handling.
What documents or records should I send before the visit?
Helpful records include prior exam notes, current medications, vaccine history, lab results, X-rays, ultrasound reports, and anything your current veterinarian has already documented. For border-related planning, please send the items that apply to your pet:
- For both dogs and cats entering Mexico: proof of a current rabies vaccine is preferred whenever available.
- For dogs returning to the United States: a microchip and CDC dog import form may be required.
- If your dog is not microchipped: tell us early so we can help you plan around that before the appointment.
- For cats: there are no specific entry requirements to enter Mexico, but we would still like your cat's complete medical history whenever possible.
How do you keep pets safe during transport?
Every pet is transported in a kennel or carrier that is securely fastened with a seat belt. That setup is the safest way to move pets in a vehicle, especially in the event of an accident or sudden stop. We build the day around secure handoffs, clear communication, and transport practices that prioritize your pet's physical safety from pickup through return.
Will I get updates while my pet is at the clinic?
Yes. CrossVetCare coordinates updates throughout the visit, especially for longer treatment days or cases that need additional clarification. If you have follow-up questions afterward, we can also provide the clinic's contact information directly and help with bilingual communication when needed.
How do payments work after I submit the form?
After you submit your pet's details, CrossVetCare reviews the case and sends you a personalized quote. If you decide to move forward, you can use the payment tab to complete the next payment step through the Stripe portal. This keeps the booking request, quote review, and payment approval as separate steps.
Are there any border-crossing requirements I should know about?
Yes. The easiest way to think about it is by pet type:
- Dogs: we prefer current rabies documentation for entry into Mexico. For return to the United States, dogs may need a microchip plus a CDC dog import form.
- Cats: cats do not have specific entry requirements for Mexico, but we do want their complete medical history whenever possible so the clinic has the right background information.
- If something is missing: tell us before booking is finalized. We can review what is missing and help you understand whether the appointment can still move forward safely and legally.
